May 7 (and this is a new one!)

This post today links to a new blog post

It is a pet peeve of mine that there a lot of well-attended autism courses out there that often charge a significant amount of money either to participants or governmental funding bodies or well meaning charities.

And the non-autistics think these courses are great. They actively recommend them to others. And they have no idea how terrible these courses really are.

Because they know little to nothing about autism they have no real metric to assess with. Only whether they enjoyed the course, whether they felt they learnt something and often, didn’t challenge their preconceptions too strongly.

Meanwhile there are a number of autistics out there putting in a lot of work to create superb courses – and getting nothing. Government agencies and local authorities won’t even set up meetings – because they want to SUPPORT autistics – not work with them.

So this post is a little bit of a rant of how bad this ‘excellent’ course was – that the government is paying far too much for. And how to spot a good course from a bad one if you genuinely want to learn how to properly support autistics.
